IS 5290 is commonly referenced when discussing fire-fighting landing valves used with hydrant and wet-riser installations in India. For procurement, however, a standard number alone is not enough. The applicable edition, product scope, testing requirements, certification evidence, and project approval conditions should be confirmed before placing an order.
What is a landing valve?
A landing valve is a controlled outlet on a fire-water riser or hydrant system. A trained responder connects a hose and branch pipe to the outlet, opens the valve, and directs water toward the fire. The valve is part of a complete firefighting point that may also include a hose, coupling, branch pipe, cap, chain, cabinet, signage, and supporting pipework.
Why IS 5290 matters in procurement
Referencing the correct Indian Standard helps buyers and consultants define the expected product requirements and documentation. It can also make comparisons between suppliers clearer. But a purchase specification should identify more than “IS 5290 valve”. It should record the required size, connection, material, pressure conditions, quantity, installation location, and evidence requested by the approving authority.
What buyers should confirm
- Exact standard and edition: confirm the current edition and whether the project specification refers to any amendments or related requirements.
- Product scope: verify that the standard applies to the particular landing-valve design, connection arrangement, and intended installation.
- Size and connection: match the valve inlet and outlet with the approved pipework, hose coupling, and branch pipe.
- Material and finish: select a construction and finish suitable for the indoor, outdoor, corrosive, or coastal environment.
- Pressure and testing: confirm the system operating conditions and request relevant test information from the supplier.
- Marking and documentation: ask what identification, inspection records, test certificates, warranty documents, or certification are required for the project.
- Authority approval: check the consultant’s specification, local fire authority requirements, and the final inspection criteria before purchase.
IS 5290 compliance is not just a product label
A landing valve can be described using a standard reference, but the installed assembly still needs to work with the hydrant system. A valve with the wrong coupling, orientation, pressure suitability, or access arrangement can create problems even when its name appears correct on a quotation. Review the valve together with the hose, branch pipe, cabinet, signage, and riser connection.
Installation and maintenance checks
After installation, confirm that the valve is accessible, clearly identified, protected from impact, and free from leakage. Check that the operating mechanism moves correctly and that the cap, chain, hose, coupling, and branch pipe are present and serviceable. Include the landing valve in the site’s planned inspection, pressure-testing, and maintenance records.
Questions to ask a supplier
Before ordering, ask the supplier to confirm the product description, size, inlet and outlet details, material, pressure information, applicable standard reference, available test documents, and warranty terms. If a certificate or marking is required, ask for the relevant evidence for the exact model and batch rather than relying on a generic catalogue statement.
Important note on standards confirmation
This article is general procurement guidance, not a certification statement. The current IS 5290 edition, exact scope, and project-specific compliance requirements should be verified with the Bureau of Indian Standards, the fire consultant, or the approving authority. UTech Fire Safety Equipment can help organise product details for technical review, but the consultant or authority responsible for the project should make the final compliance determination.
